Bill Hunkins

1951-02-18 2023-07-23
Bill passed away in 2023 at the age of 72 from lung cancer.

Bill Hunkins passed away peacefully at home in Charleston, South Carolina. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Lisa Costa, and her son, Peter (wife, Caitlin, and two step-grandchildren). He is also survived by his previous wife, Christine Dwight Hunkins, and their three children and four grandchildren.

After graduating from the U of M College of Liberal Arts, Bill moved to St. Paul and raised his three kids. Later on in life, he married Lisa and moved to Vadnais Heights, then retired to Hayward, WI, on the "Big Chip" Chippewa Flowage, and spent the last three years of his life in Charleston, SC.

He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing,(especially bass fishing), fishing tournaments around the USA, golfing, canoeing, boating, swimming, hiking, camping, water skiing and traveling. The BIg Chip year around home was enjoyed as their "cabin" for 15 years before retiring there.

He coached his sons in basketball and baseball, and his oldest son continues the tradition as a school coach. Bill got together with his co-captains from high school and other sport team members, football, basketball, baseball and track. He was a Vikings, Timberwolves and Twins fan, and watched every and any sport games, college or pro.

He worked as an IT Manager for HB Fuller and Conseco Financial. His favorite travel destinations were Hawaii and Alaska. In the twenty-four years he was married to Lisa, they traveled to thirty+ states, and the Caribbean. His last trip was a road trip to MN in late June 2023 to see family and friends. He shared his love of sports and fishing with young and old. When he took a young person fishing for their first time, and when they caught their first fish, he would insist they kiss it and throw it back for good luck! His dry sense of humor will be missed.
