Mark Gruesner
1951-11-27 2022-11-07
Mark died in 2022 at the age of 70 from Parkinson's disease.
Mark H. Gruesner, loving husband, father, grandfather “Bappi”, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, after suffering from Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carolyn, daughter, Lauren (Mike Percic), and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Cookie Hosfield (Rick) and many other family members.
Mark knew at an early age that he wanted to become an attorney. He graduated from the University of Minnesota earning a B.A. in Speech Communications before earning his Juris Doctor degree in 1977 from Hamline University School of Law. After practicing at several law firms, Mark joined Schwebel, Goetz & Sieben in 1986, where he practiced as a trial lawyer achieving justice for thousands of people impacted by injuries and wrongful death. Many of his clients became lifelong friends, and his dedication to them endured far beyond the courtroom.
Although his professional accolades are many, his greatest pride came from generations of law students he mentored and taught to be trial lawyers while an adjunct professor at Hamline University School of Law. His legacy lives on in each of them.
Mark loved golf, tennis and bowling. He was a sports enthusiast always cheering on his beloved Minnesota Twins and Gophers. He had a passion for cars, particularly convertibles, and could be seen frequently cruising Lake of the Isles, Harriet and Bede Maka Ska.
Mark loved spending time with family and friends but nothing meant more to him than spending time with his grandchildren and grand dogs, soaking up every minute of their lives, including Sunday dinners and many spring breaks in Bonita Springs, Florida and Tucson, AZ.
Here just a few of the many comments written about Mark from classmates and one of his students:
>I will greatly miss his smile, dry wit and adroit intelligence. I am just so grateful we had a chance to spend quality time together these last few months, with so many wonderful memories. Mark, you didn’t need to teach me the meaning of “mensch”- you served as the example. Thank you!
>I have so much respect and admiration for this man. Mark was a man of virtue and integrity! He was kind and caring to all people and a true family man. Mark touched the lives of everyone he met. There was something about his character that left an impression. You could feel his care, compassion with every meeting and he was fun with his charm and wit! Although our time with him has been cut short, his life was rich with love and service, a true blessing.
>As a former student, your loss is felt across borders. I thank you for sharing Mark with us and allowing us to learn from his experiences. He was an amazing professor, and truly served as one of my greatest motivators. I’m thankful that around 7 years ago, I got a chance to tell him just how much he meant to a blossoming attorney and it’s apparent I’m not the only one. He got to know his students for more than just students but as future colleagues.
